Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium-sized apples (preferably Granny Smith)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2% preferred)
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Wash and peel the apples using a vegetable peeler. Core and slice them thinly (about 1/4-inch thick).
- In a medium bowl, toss the apple slices with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a tablespoon of sugar.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then, pour in the vanilla extract and mix until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using).
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Start with a third of the flour mixture, then half of the milk, followed by another third of the flour, the remaining milk, and finally the last of the flour. Mix until just combined.
- Gently fold the prepared apple slices into the batter using a spatula.
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick spray.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it out evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove the pan from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
- Run a knife around the edges of the pan to loosen the slice, then invert the pan onto a wire rack to release the slice.
- Allow the apple slice to cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting it into squares or rectangles.
- Dust the top with powdered sugar if desired, and serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
