Oreo Balls: Easy No-Bake Recipe for Delicious Treats

May 16, 2025 by BettyDessert

Oreo Balls: Prepare to be amazed by the easiest, most decadent dessert you’ll ever make! These bite-sized treats are dangerously addictive, combining the rich, creamy goodness of Oreo cookies with the smooth, velvety texture of cream cheese, all encased in a luscious chocolate coating. Seriously, try to eat just one – I dare you!

While the exact origins of Oreo Balls are shrouded in a bit of mystery, their popularity exploded with the rise of online food blogs and recipe sharing. They represent the ultimate in no-bake convenience, perfect for potlucks, holiday gatherings, or simply satisfying a late-night sweet craving. They’re a testament to the ingenuity of home cooks who love to create delicious treats with minimal effort.

What makes these little spheres of delight so irresistible? It’s the perfect balance of textures and flavors. The slightly crumbly Oreo filling contrasts beautifully with the smooth cream cheese, while the crisp chocolate shell provides a satisfying snap. The combination of chocolate and cream is a classic for a reason, and these Oreo Balls deliver it in a perfectly portioned, utterly delightful package. Plus, they’re incredibly easy to customize with different types of chocolate, sprinkles, or even a drizzle of peanut butter. Get ready to experience dessert perfection!

Oreo Balls this Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 package (14.3 ounces) Oreo cookies, finely crushed
  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 package (12 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons shortening (vegetable or coconut oil)
  • Optional: Sprinkles, chopped nuts, or other toppings for decoration

Preparing the Oreo Crumbs

Okay, let’s get started! The first thing we need to do is crush those Oreos. Now, you have a couple of options here. You can use a food processor, which is definitely the quickest and easiest method. Just toss the whole package of Oreos (yes, the entire cookie, cream filling and all!) into the food processor and pulse until you have fine crumbs. Be careful not to over-process them into a paste.

If you don’t have a food processor, no worries! You can use the old-fashioned method: a resealable plastic bag and a rolling pin. Place the Oreos in the bag, seal it tightly, and then use the rolling pin to crush them into fine crumbs. This might take a little more elbow grease, but it’s a great way to relieve some stress! Just make sure the bag is sealed well, or you’ll end up with Oreo crumbs everywhere (trust me, I’ve been there!).

Once you’ve crushed the Oreos, set them aside in a large bowl. We’ll need them in the next step.

Mixing the Oreo and Cream Cheese

Now for the fun part – combining the Oreo crumbs with the cream cheese! Make sure your cream cheese is nice and soft. If it’s still cold and hard, it won’t mix properly with the Oreo crumbs, and you’ll end up with lumpy Oreo balls. Nobody wants that!

To soften the cream cheese, you can either leave it out at room temperature for about an hour or two, or you can microwave it for a few seconds. If you choose to microwave it, be very careful not to overheat it. Start with 15 seconds, then check the consistency. If it’s still firm, microwave it for another 5-10 seconds at a time until it’s soft and easily spreadable. Remember, we want it soft, not melted!

Add the softened cream cheese to the bowl of Oreo crumbs. Using a spoon or your hands (my personal preference – just make sure they’re clean!), mix the cream cheese and Oreo crumbs together until they are completely combined. You should have a thick, dough-like mixture. It might take a few minutes to get everything fully incorporated, but be patient and keep mixing. You want to make sure there are no streaks of cream cheese left.

Once the mixture is well combined, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This will help the mixture firm up, making it easier to roll into balls. You can even chill it for longer, up to a few hours, if you want to prepare it in advance.

Rolling the Oreo Balls

After the Oreo mixture has chilled, it’s time to roll them into balls! This is where things can get a little messy, but it’s also a lot of fun. I like to line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper to prevent the Oreo balls from sticking.

Take the Oreo mixture out of the refrigerator. Using a spoon or a small cookie scoop, scoop out about a tablespoon of the mixture. Roll it between your palms to form a smooth ball. The size is really up to you, but I find that a tablespoon is a good size – not too big, not too small.

Place the rolled Oreo ball on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat this process until you’ve used up all of the Oreo mixture. If the mixture starts to get too soft and sticky, you can pop it back into the refrigerator for a few minutes to firm it up again.

Once all of the Oreo balls are rolled, place the baking sheet in the freezer for at least 15 minutes. This will help them firm up even more, making them easier to dip in chocolate. You can even freeze them for longer, up to an hour, if you want to make sure they’re really solid.

Melting the Chocolate

While the Oreo balls are chilling in the freezer, it’s time to melt the chocolate. You have two options here: you can use a double boiler or the microwave. I personally prefer the microwave because it’s quicker and easier, but a double boiler is a good option if you’re worried about burning the chocolate.

Using the Microwave: Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips and shortening in a microwave-safe bowl. The shortening helps to thin out the chocolate and gives it a nice, smooth consistency. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Be very careful not to overheat the chocolate, as it can burn easily. If you see any signs of burning, stop microwaving immediately and stir vigorously to try to salvage it.

Using a Double Boiler: Fill the bottom pot of a double boiler with water and bring it to a simmer. Place the chocolate chips and shortening in the top pot of the double boiler. Make sure the bottom of the top pot doesn’t touch the water. Stir the chocolate constantly until it’s completely melted and smooth. This method takes a little longer than the microwave, but it’s a more gentle way to melt the chocolate and prevents it from burning.

Once the chocolate is melted and smooth, remove it from the heat and set it aside.

Dipping the Oreo Balls

Now for the final step – dipping the Oreo balls in chocolate! This is where the magic happens. Take the baking sheet of frozen Oreo balls out of the freezer.

Using a fork or dipping tools, carefully dip each Oreo ball into the melted chocolate, making sure it’s completely coated. Gently tap off any excess chocolate. You can also use a spoon to help coat the Oreo balls if you’re having trouble getting them fully covered.

Place the dipped Oreo ball back on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Immediately sprinkle with your desired toppings, such as sprinkles, chopped nuts, or anything else you like. The toppings need to be added while the chocolate is still wet, so they’ll stick properly.

Repeat this process until all of the Oreo balls are dipped and decorated.

Setting and Storing

Once all of the Oreo balls are dipped and decorated, place the baking sheet back in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is set. This will help the chocolate harden and prevent the Oreo balls from getting sticky.

Once the chocolate is set, you can transfer the Oreo balls to an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to a week. They can also be frozen for longer storage. Just make sure they’re in a freezer-safe container to prevent freezer burn.

And that’s it! You’ve successfully made Oreo balls. Enjoy!
