Maple Brown Butter Coffee: A Deliciously Simple Recipe

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

Rich and decadent Maple Brown Butter Coffee combines strong brewed coffee with nutty brown butter, sweet maple syrup, and creamy goodness for an unforgettable coffee experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups freshly brewed strong coffee
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (use pure maple syrup for the best flavor!)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Whipped cream
  • Cinnamon
  • Maple syrup drizzle
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts

Instructions

  1. Place the 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a light-colored saucepan over medium heat.
  2. As the butter melts, it will begin to foam. Continue cooking, swirling the pan occasionally, until the foaming subsides and you start to see brown specks forming at the bottom of the pan. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
  3. The butter will start to smell nutty and fragrant.
  4. Once the butter is a deep golden brown and smells nutty, immediately remove the pan from the heat.
  5. Let the brown butter cool slightly for a minute or two before adding it to the coffee mixture.
  6. Brew 6 cups of strong coffee using your preferred method.
  7. In a large saucepan or pot, combine the freshly brewed coffee, heavy cream, maple syrup, the brown butter you just made (including all those delicious brown bits!), vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt.
  8. Place the pot over low heat and gently warm the mixture. Do not boil! Stir occasionally to ensure everything is well combined.
  9. Taste the coffee and adjust the sweetness to your liking.
  10. Use a whisk to vigorously whisk the coffee mixture for about 30 seconds. This will help emulsify the butter and cream, creating a smooth and creamy texture. You can also use an immersion blender for this step, but be careful not to over-blend.
  11. Pour the Maple Brown Butter Coffee into your favorite mugs.
  12. Top with whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon, a drizzle of maple syrup, and/or chopped pecans or walnuts.
  13. Serve the coffee immediately while it’s hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Dairy-Free Option: Substitute the heavy cream with coconut cream or almond milk for a dairy-free version.
  • Sweetener Alternatives: If you don’t have maple syrup, you can use honey, agave nectar, or brown sugar as a sweetener.
  • Spice it Up: Add a pinch of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom to the coffee mixture for a warm and cozy flavor.
  • Boozy Version: Add a shot of bourbon, rum, or Irish cream liqueur for an adult twist.
  • Iced Coffee: Let the coffee cool completely and pour it over ice for a refreshing iced version.
  • Brown Butter Infusion: For an even more intense brown butter flavor, infuse the coffee beans with brown butter before brewing. Simply toss the coffee beans with a tablespoon of brown butter and let them sit for a few minutes before grinding and brewing.
  • Make it a Mocha: Add a tablespoon or two of cocoa powder to the coffee mixture for a chocolatey twist.
  • Use Different Extracts: Experiment with different extracts, such as almond extract or hazelnut extract, to add a unique flavor to the coffee.
  • Adjust Coffee Strength: If you prefer a stronger coffee, use more coffee grounds when brewing. If you prefer a weaker coffee, use less.
  • Make a Large Batch: This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled to serve a crowd. Just adjust the ingredient amounts accordingly.
