Description
A refreshing and hydrating drink made with chia seeds, lemon juice, and a touch of sweetness. Perfect for a healthy boost any time of day!
Ingredients
Scale
- 16 ounces (2 cups) filtered water
- 2 tablespoons chia seeds
- 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 1 medium lemon)
- 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
- Optional: Lemon slices for garnish
- Optional: Mint sprigs for garnish
- Optional: A pinch of sea salt
Instructions
- Combine Water and Chia Seeds: In a glass or jar, pour the filtered water. Add the chia seeds to the water. Make sure the chia seeds are evenly distributed to prevent clumping.
- Stir Well: Use a spoon or fork to thoroughly stir the chia seeds into the water. This initial stirring is crucial to prevent the seeds from settling at the bottom and clumping together.
- Let the Mixture Sit and Hydrate: Allow the chia seeds to soak in the water for at least 15-20 minutes. During this time, the chia seeds will absorb the water and expand, forming a gel-like consistency. This process is what makes chia seed water so hydrating and beneficial. You’ll notice the mixture thickening as the chia seeds hydrate. For a thicker consistency, you can let it sit for up to an hour.
- Add Lemon Juice: Once the chia seeds have hydrated, add the freshly squeezed lemon juice to the mixture. The lemon juice not only adds a refreshing flavor but also provides a boost of vitamin C.
- Sweeten to Taste: Add your sweetener of choice. I prefer honey or maple syrup, but you can also use agave nectar, stevia, or any other sweetener you like. Start with 1 tablespoon and adjust to your preference. Remember, you can always add more, but you can’t take it away!
- Stir Again: Stir the mixture well to ensure that the lemon juice and sweetener are evenly distributed. You want everything to be nicely incorporated for the best flavor.
- Optional: Add a Pinch of Salt: A tiny pinch of sea salt can enhance the flavors of the lemon and sweetener. It might sound strange, but it really does make a difference! Just a very small pinch is all you need.
- Chill (Optional): While you can drink your lemon chia water immediately, I find it’s much more refreshing when chilled. Place the glass or jar in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to an hour to allow it to cool down.
- Garnish (Optional): Before serving, you can garnish your lemon chia water with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint. This makes it look extra appealing and adds a touch of elegance.
- Serve and Enjoy: Give the mixture one last stir before serving, as the chia seeds may settle slightly. Enjoy your refreshing and hydrating lemon chia water!
Notes
- Adjust Sweetness: The amount of sweetener you need will depend on your personal preference and the tartness of your lemon. Start with a small amount and add more until you reach your desired level of sweetness.
- Use Fresh Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice is always best for flavor. Bottled lemon juice can sometimes have a slightly artificial taste.
- Experiment with Flavors: Feel free to experiment with other flavors. You can add a few slices of cucumber, a handful of berries, or a small piece of ginger to the mixture.
- Make a Larger Batch: If you want to make a larger batch of lemon chia water, simply multiply the ingredients accordingly. Just be sure to store it in the refrigerator and consume it within a few days.
- Add Fruit: Muddle some berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) at the bottom of your glass before adding the chia water for a fruity twist.
- Spice it Up: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a subtle kick.
- Herbal Infusion: Infuse the water with herbs like basil or rosemary for a more complex flavor profile. Let the herbs steep in the water for a few hours before adding the chia seeds.
- Coconut Water: Substitute coconut water for regular water for added electrolytes and a tropical flavor.
- Sparkling Lemon Chia Water: Use sparkling water instead of still water for a fizzy and refreshing drink. Add the chia seeds to a small amount of still water first to hydrate them, then top with sparkling water.
- Green Tea Infusion: Brew a cup of green tea and let it cool completely. Use the cooled green tea instead of water for a boost of antioxidants.
