Description

This Japanese Neapolitan-style spaghetti features tender pasta tossed in a savory sauce with sautéed vegetables, diced ham, and crushed tomatoes. Quick and satisfying, it’s perfect for any occasion!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 200g spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper (red or green), sliced
  • 100g button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 150g cooked ham, diced
  • 200g canned tomatoes, crushed
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil. Add a generous pinch of salt.
  2. Add the spaghetti to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions (8-10 minutes) until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. Drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside. Toss with a little olive oil to prevent sticking.
  4. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  5. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent.
  6. Add the sliced bell pepper and mushrooms, sautéing for another 5 minutes until tender.
  7. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute, being careful not to burn it.
  8. Stir in the diced ham and cook for 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  9. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Let simmer for about 10 minutes.
  10. Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet and toss gently to coat with the sauce.
  11. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  12. Serve the spaghetti on plates or in a large bowl.
  13. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and add grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
  14. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Vegetarian Option: Omit the ham and add more vegetables like zucchini or spinach, or use tofu for protein.
  • Spice it Up: Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for heat.
  • Make it Creamy: Stir in heavy cream or sour cream for a creamier sauce.
  • Leftovers: Store in the fridge for a couple of days; reheat gently with a splash of water or broth.
  • Pairing Suggestions: Serve with a side salad or garlic bread, and enjoy with a light white wine or iced tea.
