- 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional, walnuts or pecans recommended)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Do not let it brown.
- Remove from heat and stir in the granulated sugar until glossy.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.
- Fold in chocolate chips and optional nuts.
- If making homemade caramel, combine sugar and water in a saucepan, cooking until golden. Stir in heavy cream and salt, then let cool.
- Warm store-bought caramel sauce if using.
- Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper and grease lightly.
- Spread half of the brownie batter into the prepared pan.
- Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the batter and swirl gently.
- Pour the remaining brownie batter over the caramel layer.
- Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce on top and swirl gently.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
- Let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then lift out using parchment and cool completely on a wire rack.
- Cut into squares with a sharp knife.
- Serve as is or with ice cream and extra caramel sauce.
