  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional, walnuts or pecans recommended)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Do not let it brown.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the granulated sugar until glossy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  7. Fold in chocolate chips and optional nuts.
  8. If making homemade caramel, combine sugar and water in a saucepan, cooking until golden. Stir in heavy cream and salt, then let cool.
  9. Warm store-bought caramel sauce if using.
  10. Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper and grease lightly.
  11. Spread half of the brownie batter into the prepared pan.
  12. Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the batter and swirl gently.
  13. Pour the remaining brownie batter over the caramel layer.
  14. Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce on top and swirl gently.
  15. Bake for 30-35 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  16. Let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then lift out using parchment and cool completely on a wire rack.
  17. Cut into squares with a sharp knife.
  18. Serve as is or with ice cream and extra caramel sauce.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider using dark chocolate cocoa powder.
