Blood Orange Smoothie: The Ultimate Guide to a Healthy & Delicious Drink

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Description

Vibrant blood orange smoothie with frozen banana, Greek yogurt, and honey. Quick, refreshing, and perfect for breakfast or a snack!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large blood oranges, peeled and segmented
  • 1 frozen banana, sliced
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat or non-fat)
  • 1/4 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds (optional)
  • A few ice cubes (optional)
  • Blood orange zest, for garnish (optional)
  • A slice of blood orange, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Blood Oranges: Peel the blood oranges, removing as much white pith as possible. Segment the oranges over a bowl to catch the juice.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Add the blood orange segments (and juice), frozen banana, Greek yogurt, milk, honey (or maple syrup), and chia seeds (if using) to a blender.
  3. Blend: Blend on high speed until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed.
  4. Adjust Consistency: If too thick, add more milk (1 tablespoon at a time). If too thin, add ice cubes or frozen berries.
  5. Taste and Adjust Sweetness: Add more honey or maple syrup if needed.
  6. Add Ice (Optional): Add ice cubes and blend again for a colder smoothie.
  7. Pour and Garnish: Pour into a glass. Garnish with blood orange zest and a slice of blood orange (optional).
  8. Serve: Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a thicker smoothie, freeze the blood orange segments beforehand.
  • Add a handful of spinach or kale for extra nutrients.
  • Boost protein with a scoop of protein powder.
  • Spice it up with a pinch of ginger or cinnamon.
  • Make it tropical with pineapple or mango.
  • Add a tablespoon of nut butter for healthy fats.
  • Try flax seeds or hemp seeds for extra fiber and omega-3s.
  • Use dates or stevia as sweetness alternatives.
  • Experiment with different types of yogurt.
  • A little bit of orange, lemon, or lime zest can add a burst of flavor to your smoothie.
  • Vegan Variation: Replace Greek yogurt with plant-based yogurt and honey with maple syrup, agave nectar, or date syrup.
  • Choosing Blood Oranges: Select blood oranges that are heavy for their size, firm, and have a deep, rich color and sweet aroma.
