Description
Vibrant blood orange smoothie with frozen banana, Greek yogurt, and honey. Quick, refreshing, and perfect for breakfast or a snack!
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large blood oranges, peeled and segmented
- 1 frozen banana, sliced
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat or non-fat)
- 1/4 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
- 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds (optional)
- A few ice cubes (optional)
- Blood orange zest, for garnish (optional)
- A slice of blood orange, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Blood Oranges: Peel the blood oranges, removing as much white pith as possible. Segment the oranges over a bowl to catch the juice.
- Combine Ingredients: Add the blood orange segments (and juice), frozen banana, Greek yogurt, milk, honey (or maple syrup), and chia seeds (if using) to a blender.
- Blend: Blend on high speed until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed.
- Adjust Consistency: If too thick, add more milk (1 tablespoon at a time). If too thin, add ice cubes or frozen berries.
- Taste and Adjust Sweetness: Add more honey or maple syrup if needed.
- Add Ice (Optional): Add ice cubes and blend again for a colder smoothie.
- Pour and Garnish: Pour into a glass. Garnish with blood orange zest and a slice of blood orange (optional).
- Serve: Serve immediately.
Notes
- For a thicker smoothie, freeze the blood orange segments beforehand.
- Add a handful of spinach or kale for extra nutrients.
- Boost protein with a scoop of protein powder.
- Spice it up with a pinch of ginger or cinnamon.
- Make it tropical with pineapple or mango.
- Add a tablespoon of nut butter for healthy fats.
- Try flax seeds or hemp seeds for extra fiber and omega-3s.
- Use dates or stevia as sweetness alternatives.
- Experiment with different types of yogurt.
- A little bit of orange, lemon, or lime zest can add a burst of flavor to your smoothie.
- Vegan Variation: Replace Greek yogurt with plant-based yogurt and honey with maple syrup, agave nectar, or date syrup.
- Choosing Blood Oranges: Select blood oranges that are heavy for their size, firm, and have a deep, rich color and sweet aroma.
