Apple Dump Cake: The Easiest Dessert Recipe You’ll Ever Make

  • Total Time: 65 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Description

Dump, bake, and enjoy this easy apple dessert made with cake mix, apple pie filling, and a buttery topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
  • 1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • ¾ cup (1 ½ sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Apple Base: Pour the apple pie filling into the prepared baking dish. Spread evenly. If using, sprinkle nuts and cinnamon evenly over the apple pie filling.
  3. Cake Topping: Evenly sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix over the apple pie filling. Do not mix. Cut the cold butter into small pieces and distribute evenly over the dry cake mix.
  4. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  5. Cool & Serve: Let the cake cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired. Drizzle with caramel sauce, sprinkle with extra cinnamon or chopped nuts, if desired.

Notes

  • Variations: Use different pie fillings (cherry, blueberry, peach), cake mixes (white, chocolate, spice), or add a layer of cream cheese before the cake mix. You can also add a streusel topping.
  • Slow Cooker: This can be made in a slow cooker on low for 6-8 hours.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven.
  • Dry Cake: If the cake is too dry, use less cake mix or more butter. Add a tablespoon or two of melted butter to the cake mix before sprinkling.
  • Soggy Cake: If the cake is too soggy, use less apple pie filling or more cake mix. Drain excess liquid from the apple pie filling.
  • Topping Not Brown: Ensure your oven is hot enough and bake until golden brown. Broil for a minute or two at the end, watching carefully.
  • Sticking: Grease the baking dish thoroughly or line with parchment paper.
